Sony is considering a version of its PS5 console with a removable Blu-ray driveThe next version of the PlayStation 5 would come with a removable Blu-ray drive that could be purchased separately. It would hit the market in September 2023.

According to sources close to Sony, interviewed by Tom Henderson of the Insider Gaming site, the manufacturer is working on a new version of its PlayStation 5 game console, with a planned launch around September 2023. This version would have the particularity of a Blu-ray detachable and connected to the console via a USB Type-C link. For this, the PS5 would have an additional USB Type-C port on the back.

So it would be possible to buy the console with or without an optical drive, or even buy the drive separately. This can be very useful if it breaks. In addition, the reader would be designed to fit into the console without compromising on aesthetics. The set would therefore have a similar appearance to the current PS5. And without the optical unit, the console would be thinner and lighter.

The manufacturer is said to have planned to produce 18.5 million units of the new PlayStation 5 during fiscal year 2023, which ends in March 2024, as well as 12 million units of the previous generation that will be phased out.

For now, the new version would be codenamed PlayStation 5 chassis. Indeed, the manufacturer has offered three different chassis (A, B and C) since the launch of the PlayStation 5 in November 2020. A first revision took place in August 2021, with a smaller heat sink and a weight reduction of 300 g. A second revision was discovered in Australia last August, codenamed CFI-1202A (with optical reader) and CFI-1202B (digital model). Thus, the optical drive model would show a weight of 3.9kg on the scale, an additional reduction of 300g, while the PS5 Digital Edition would be only 3.5kg, an additional reduction of 200g. The consoles would also be 13% smaller than previous models.

The second revision models should be available in Japan from September 15, but Sony has not provided any information about their availability in France. On the other hand, the manufacturer has increased the prices of PlayStation 5 due to the shortage of components and inflation. In Europe, the version with integration of the Blu-ray reader went from 499.99 euros to 549.99 euros, while the digital version (Digital Edition) went from 399.99 euros to 449.99 euros. Which incurs the ire of prospective players who are already struggling to get their hands on the Sony console.
