Microsoft increases the price of Xbox games to 80 eurosThe price increase for Xbox games has been expected for several weeks and is official. For now, the Game Pass will be spared.

It’s official, Microsoft has confirmed to our colleagues at IGN that the price of games exclusive to the Xbox Series S and Series X will increase in January. The price goes up to 80 euros and the first title to undergo this price increase is the long-awaited Starfield. ” This price reflects the content, breadth and technical complexity of these titles explains Microsoft. But will the argument be enough to convince the players? Some of them had turned to the Microsoft console, mainly because of the slightly more attractive prices. Indeed, on the Sony side, titles have been sold exclusively for the PS5 for 80 euros since the console was launched. Microsoft can always claim that it is only following a “logical” trend, which is that of the inexorable rise in video game prices. The dramatic price increase of the PS5 this summer was therefore not an isolated event.

Microsoft will also be able to cite the examples of Take-Two or even Ubisoft that have gone to this price of 80 euros for several months. This increase is therefore anything but a surprise and Redmond has been working on it for several weeks. Indeed, during one of his latest media outings in October, Xbox Game Studios head Phil Spencer said: I think at some point we’re going to have to raise the prices of some things “.

To be precise, Microsoft has only communicated about US pricing for now. These were $60 before the announcement and will drop to $70 (69.99) in a few weeks. With this price, Microsoft adheres to the pricing strategy of its competitors. It should therefore apply the same recipe in France and display a price of 80 euros.

All inclusive with the Game Pass

Microsoft probably had to make a choice between raising the price of its console or its games. The option chosen is clear and challenging when the platform is about to welcome some beautiful exclusives, Starfield, Redfall or Forza Motorsport. Nevertheless, it allows us to guess a clear strategy: that of focusing on the Game Pass. It is no coincidence that when confirming the bad news, Redmond wanted to remind that “like all games developed by our teams on Xbox, they will also be available with Game Pass on the same day of their launch. »

The message couldn’t be clearer: “go for the Game Pass”. Microsoft’s subscription formula was already one of the most interesting on the market. There’s no question that Redmond wants to bet even more on it. As a reminder, subscribers to the service can access a plethora of games online according to one of three subscription formulas that range from 9.90 to 12.99 euros per month. The player does not own the titles they play, but they can enjoy them during their subscription, even offline.

In the game of rising prices, Microsoft wins time and time again. In the first scenario, selling physical games allows it to increase its margins. In the other, he encourages his customers to turn to his subscription service, where he can count on their loyalty.
