Is Meta launching a competitor to Twitter soon?

Facebook’s parent company is exploring the possibility of creating an autonomous decentralized social network, similar to Twitter, to share text updates.

After the Metaverse and Artificial Intelligence, Meta Platforms Inc would seize on the other trend of the moment in Silicon Valley: creating a competitor to Twitter. As the social network bought by Elon Musk slowly sinks into deep gloom, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram is exploring the possibility of creating a competitive platform, also based on text. The future application would be codenamed P92, the first MoneyControl, an Indian economic information site, revealed.

Meta then confirmed the information to our colleagues at Platformer. “ We are exploring the possibility of creating a self-contained decentralized social network for sharing text updates “Explains the group founded by Mark Zuckerberg. ” We believe there is an opportunity for a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests. added the company. Few details have been released so far.

We only know that users would log in with their existing Instagram credentials – by the way, Adam Mosseri, the director of Instagram, is taking charge of the project. Other information, the new application is said to support ActivityPub, the decentralized social networking protocol that powers Twitter’s rival Mastodon. But otherwise it is radio silence: no release date has yet been mentioned, the future application would only be in its infancy.

A decentralized system, far removed from the current Meta model

Meta’s choice to build a decentralized network is unexpected. Admittedly, creating a new Twitter after the wave of departing users that followed Elon Musk’s controversial decisions is a popular idea in Silicon Valley. And this type of network could also be a turn off for all the usual criticisms of Facebook and Instagram for their hierarchical approach to moderation and manipulation of information. In fact, such a system would be more resilient in the face of censorship attempts by certain governments or organizations.

But the decentralized and autonomous operation of the P92 would be a far cry from the culture of Meta. In such a system, users can set up independent servers and, above all, define moderation rules specific to each server – with a “floor” of rules set by Meta, as it works at Reddit. It would also be possible to switch from one network to another – while regular social networks such as Facebook or Instagram make that interoperability difficult or even impossible. In December, for example, Elon Musk temporarily prevented Twitter users from linking to their Mastodon profile.

And above all, such a network must be made profitable. However, so far no decentralized server has reached the stage of profitability. And Meta’s current business model — of advertising and data collection — would be hard to transpose with this kind of structure. Another difficulty, following a user, as possible on Twitter, is not easy within one autonomous decentralized social network, because accounts are spread over a large network of servers. Pending more information, Meta should fight hard to become the leading platform in this textual social networking market. Last Competitor: Bluesky, a decentralized alternative to Twitter, was launched on iOS last week in a private beta… by bluebird co-founder Jack Dorsey.
