Google is said to be working on integrating a system of automatically generated responses by artificial intelligence for its messaging application on Android.

Do you often lack inspiration to respond to the messages you receive? Google may have found a solution to get you out of this mess. Indeed, the Mountain View company could soon offer its Android application, Messages, a feature to automatically generate responses to the messages you receive.

AI-generated responses

Our colleagues from 9to5Google, accustomed to parsing the installation files of Android applications, found in the latest Google Messages APK file, several clues suggesting that Google intends to use artificial intelligence in its application. In the comment field of a message, a new button with small stars (or small sparks), grafted next to the button to access emojis and very similar to the one used in Google Bard. For now, activating this button only displays an intriguing message (TO DO!)a sign that the feature is still in a very early stage of development.

According to 9to5Google, this new feature could just turn out to be a tool powered by Bard, or using the LaMDA language model, to automatically generate a response to the message received. If you use this button, the generated message will not be sent immediately, but will be displayed in the input field so that you can read it again before sending it.

Bard soon integrated into Google Messages?

With the arrival of such a function, Google could go much further than the current Smart Replies, which are only satisfied with very simple answers. If Google were to integrate a system of automatic responses generated by its AI, there is a good chance that these Smart Replies as we know them today will disappear. Either way, integrating Bard into the various Google tools would undoubtedly allow the Mountain View company to drive adoption of its AI and perhaps catch up.

Although it seemed to be at the forefront of the field until a few months ago, Google was beaten by Microsoft, which managed to surprise everyone within a few months. Since ChatGPT’s public preview launch in early December 2022, Microsoft has managed to integrate its ChatGPT-based conversational chatbot into all of its tools. In February, the Redmond company integrated the conversational robot into its Bing search engine. More recently, at the beginning of this month of March, Microsoft announced the arrival of Copilot, a virtual assistant powered by AI from OpenAI, which is supposed to help users create better content with the tools of the Office suite.
