Expected for 2024, Windows 12 is once again discussed, this time detailing the minimum configuration the operating system could require. We take stock.

While Windows 11 struggles to win against Windows 10, that doesn’t stop Microsoft from working on the next version of its flagship operating system. Today, the German site Deskmodder says it has new information about the requirements to use Windows 12.

Where does Microsoft stand with Windows 12?

Windows 12 is still discreet. At the Microsoft Ignite 2022 event, the company released a concept of what its future operating system could look like. We can see a floating taskbar (a dock), as well as a clock in the top right corner and the weather in the left corner, always at the top of the interface.

As you can see in the image below, the search bar directly on the desktop comes with quite a radical layout change compared to Windows 11. The ability to place widgets directly on the desktop could also play a role. A new configuration that is already the subject of more or less hidden testing via the Microsoft Edge Canary (Insider) channel.

Panos Panay, the big boss of Windows, has already spoken about the next versions of the operating system. He explained that Windows 12 will be a mix of cloud-based and AI-based experiences. Two areas on which the company focuses a lot, as evidenced by the arrival of AI on Microsoft 365 or its new collaboration tool Loop, which will compete with Asana or Notion.

If no official date has yet been shared on the launch date of Microsoft’s next operating system, the initial indiscretions are calling for a 2024 release. Indeed, the Redmond giant would return to a more traditional calendar for Windows that would propose a major release every three years.

What minimum configuration for Windows 12?

The system requirements for Windows 11 are now considered quite strict, making computers only a few years old incompatible. Circumstances that led many users to stay on Windows 10 or bypass restrictions to install Windows 11 on incompatible machines.

Earlier rumors pointed to the possibility of a simultaneous release of Windows 12 and Intel’s 14th generation “Meteor Lake-S” processors. Originally expected for early 2024, the Founder’s chips may be delayed, calling into question this simultaneous release and reshuffling the schedule of the two products.

According to information from the German site Deskmodder, Windows 12 should continue to use TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module). This cryptographic standard for cryptoprocessors, which was highlighted during the Windows 11 presentation, is now a required component for the operating system installation. The new “Pluto” security chip, installed on some devices since early 2022, is even more secure than TPM 2.0 against malware and physical attacks. The latter would not be required to run Windows 12.

Finally, the minimum amount of RAM could be increased to 8 GB (compared to 4 GB for Windows 11). This could be explained by the ability to run the operating system in the cloud, as currently being tested in certain versions of Windows 11 Insider. On the CPU side, the requirements would probably remain the same: an 8th gen Intel processor or an AMD with Zen 2 architecture.
